Movie Review - Into the Woods
A movie that recently came out on DVD and Blu-ray and will be my first movie review is Rob Marshall's Into The Woods
WARNING! Spoilers ahead so go to your Facebook page, or read some of my other posts or watch the movie online before reading this! You have been warned!
This movie is based on James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim musical of the same name. In short its has all different beloved fairytales like Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Little Red Riding Hood in one brand new story of the Baker and his Wife who are trying to have a child.
They all go into the woods to get what they want but what they soon realize is that what they want comes with some consequences.
It has a great ensemble with the talents of Meryl Streep, Anna Kendrick, Emily Blunt, Daniel Huttlestone and many, many others and such a great director, Rob Marshall.
This movie is a musical which, I feel in this industry is automatically doomed to fail, is not for everyone. I asked a few people to come with me to see this and they turned me down. My Mom's hatred to towards musicals breaks my heart. But this is not just any musical, this is a musical that your grandparents, uncles, aunts know about. It has been done professionally and by schools. I believe the most notable one being the 1991 stage play that had the amazing Bernadette Peters.
I was extremely excited for this movie when I heard it was coming out, not because I had heard of it before because I hadn't. But because I know those fairytales and love them. It was great to see the characters you and I love and have read about thrown into a brand new story with a twist! It was a great concept.
The music can either break or bring up a movie and when it's a musical! You better believe that the music is outstanding! And did this movie deliver! The music is amazing! Stephen Sondheim is a genius and outstanding at what he does.
It's not only the music but the score! I have to say that the score is my favourite part! And it supports my favourite part in the whole movie really well, when Rapunzel runs across the water with snakes in it to get to her prince, that moment and the music is perfect.
There is very little CG in this movie but where there is, it is really well done from the witch's powers to the giants in the movie, to some of the scenery, for a musical is it up there to a, I would say, Harry Potter quality.
I would recommend this movie but in my opinion not to small kids, it's a great family fun, funny musical but there are moments in the movie that I believe you would have to explain to your kids before letting them watch it.
For example in the movie there is a scene where the baker's wife and cinderella's prince run into each other and they have a "moment" (people who have seen the movie and know the soundtrack will get that joke). After the baker's wife sings about it, she dies. So...have fun explaining that to your kids.
There's other things too like Cinderella's stepsister slapped her across the face or the baker killing the wolf OR...!
On IMDB it's rated 6.2/10. I gave it 8/10 because it's a really good musical, well put together with editing and audio and CG.
Please comment below and tell me what you think and see Into the Woods
ALSO! They had a questionnaire with the people who did Rapunzel and her Prince and they answered a question of mine in a video, please take a look and enjoy!
Blessings!
