The Penguin - Mini Series Review

 

I'm not saying this for the sake of saying it, i literally BINGED watched the penguin and it was just as good as i thought it would be! honestly, i think better! and i wanna talk about it!

spoilers....probably....most likely....

I was already a fan of The Batman, saw it in theatres, bought on 4K and got the art book! I was so obsessed! 

and while The Batman isn't a world i like being in, i mean it's gotham....look at this place 

okay so this is the concept art but still! look at it! who would wanna live here???

it's definitely a world i am invested and interested in so to see more of it, even in a mini series, is great!

Off the bat, 

no pun...intended....?

the acting and makeup is...so good! honestly I don't think i need to spend too much time on this part...

Colin Farrell...as Oz is just...wow...

he does just disappear in this role! and it's not just the makeup though they knocked it outta the park too! the mannerisms, the walk, the accent...it all just works! while i was watching him i couldn't believe that this guy

ruuner up for me was Sofia Falcone played by...

the mother from How I Met Your Mother!! No seriously! look it up! i did and i was shocked!!

Cristin Milioti

she was fantastic! i loved her performance and i felt for her character so much. there's a whole episode dedicated to her backstory and how she got the name "the hangman" 

it's so sad and shows that blood is apparently not thicker than water. seriously, if your the son/daughter of a mob boss and think your safe from their tyranny because "family"...yeahhhhh no...

to me, she was the protagonist and the character i wanted to see win. yes she does technically...remove the rest of her family but i understood why

omg...

does that make me a bad person...

am i crazy...

soooo she was great! there was only two things i had a problem with, one small and one big...

the small one being (and it didn't happen a lot) but she dropped her accent and kinda took me out, the big one...i'll wait until later

i have watched a few reviews on the series and in most of them i heard them say that your suppose to "root" for Oz, that the writers makes it so your on his side, care about him, make him sympathetic at least when it comes to his mom, etc

I didn't...get that

Even if that was the intent of the writers, i didn't feel that way and i'm thinking i'm the only one.

regardless of how he treats, loves and only wants the best for his ma, or how he took victor under his wing...

oh yeah, victor is this kid who tries to steal his car, Oz catches him & makes him his #2 for the length of the series...at least...until...well...the end...

he is still THE PENGUIN. He still can't be trusted and he's only looking out for one person, HIM. Not victor, not the low class of gotham and not his ma!

there's literally a scene where all he needs to do is tell the truth so his mom's finger doesn't get chopped off and he doesn't do it! he doesn't care!

it's also the thing that kinda got me upset about sofia

in the beginning she's not fooled by Oz, like you think he won't be able to pull the wool over her eyes which just made me love her even more

but then...

she goes ahead and teams up with him

yeah until the truth is revealed and she goes after him again but still....girl...

okay i guess make that 3 things about the character i had a problem with lol

you know what, let's just talk about that third thing right now...

around the end of series sofia wants to make Oz pay, to see him suffer and be in pain and you know what...i was all in. i know Oz isn't gonna die but with him being the kinda character he is & what we learn about his past, i needed him to have some kind of comeuppance!

so sofia has Oz and his mom (sorry her name is Francis) tied up in a building they went to in the past and tries to force Oz to tell his mom what he did to his brothers and then hopefully get fancis to tell Oz what she had in store for him after  

so let's just rewind a quick sec...

Oz left his bothers in an underground tunnel where they drowned and died. he went home, lied to his mom about where his brothers were and they sat on the couch watching tv together

francis eventually found out what he did and was going to get...i think her mob boss friend to uummm...take Oz out

forever

this whole family is mad...

annnndd back to the present...

so Oz...doesn't tell the truth, almost get's his mom's finger chopped off for it, Francis snaps and tells Oz she knew, she knew what he did, how she planned to have him killed and  that she hates hi

oh she also stabs with a broken bottle

but that doesn't do anything...

the words have no affect on him...

Oz doesn't care....

he heals from his wounds,  puts his mom up in a penthouse after she falls into a coma after stabbing him

sofia gets put back in arkham 

and Oz is now the new kingpin of crime in gotham

...

I was SO mad...

there was no satisfaction! Oz isn't hurt and no justice is given! Sofia's plan failed and i was not happy about it

Oh! Also....Oz kills Victor!

yeah victor! 

his young apprentice! 

Victor looked up to Oz, gave up an opportunity to leave gotham and this whole world behind, Oz would have let 'em too, but no....loyalty....being a man...

but nooo...means nothing to Oz, took him out no prob

 and all this....nothing...! 

no leg cut off, ego bruised....nothing! Nothing affected OZ

I kid you not, i cannot WAIT for Batman to finish up whatever the heck he's doing and beat this guy's ass!

like i need him to go full akrham knight on him!

speaking of which...

WHERE THE HECKKKK WAS BATMAN??!!

the main two mob families are going at it, the power grab that selina referenced is happening (not really but still) and he is....nowhere to be found?!

while watching i just had that thought in the back of my mind constantly, like Batman, come take control of your city!!

But real talks, it wasn't that big a deal not having him there. I was so invested in the other characters and world it didn't bother me or really take away anything from the series.

so to sum up, the show was great and i'm now even more interested in where they will take it next, sofia meeting selina, how batman handles penguin and who the next major villain will be now that the main two mob bosses are out of the picture. 

i feel it really does open the door for some other villains. some i would like to see are,

mr freeze

man bat

pyg

i guess...court of owls but i don't know much about them so

anyways, solid 8.5/10 honestly probably 9/10. it's just that good and would so recommend!
