Alien Romulus - Movie Review
I really didn't think this would be my next post but I just saw this movie and wanted to say a few things about it.
BEWARE OF SPOILERS.
For i guess this movie and other alien movies...
first a little back story...
to gear up for this movie I decided to, FINALLY, what the aliens movies. Horror is not my genre but there are some films that i find...interesting in this genre like Brightburn and It.
after watching most of the alien movies, I can now confidently say alien is one of them too
as much as Aliens is well regarded and i guess in some cases considered the best, I prefer Alien.
I'm not sure why, maybe it's because the number of aliens and cast is doubled is the sequel and i prefer how more focused and confined the first one is. I also like the slow pacing of the first one
while the second one is fun & definitely delivers on the action, I just prefer the craftmanship of the first one more.
the others...I thought....were so dumb...
the humans were so dumb...
from cloning, to not separating in pairs, to not wanting to the kill the alien but study and capture it...
they deserved to die...
and that's all I'm saying on that...
okay back the review...
I didn't have expectations for this movie so it didn't disappoint me. If I had to rank them it would be Alien, Aliens and then Alien: Romulus and in that order. Having the action in-between of the other two is a nice break.
so if you seem any of the alien movies you pretty much have seen this movie. seriously, there's nothing different about this one expect for some new elements of gore. but even then it doesn't seem new...just a different...design or concept
even though i watched the movies, i'm not too familiar with the mumbo-jumbo so please bear with me. In this movie, a couple of young colonizers explore this "abandon" aircraft to gather supplies to help them get off their current planet to search for a better life.
...
okay so from what i understand they want a better life...somewhere else...and in order to get there they need get the supplies from the aircraft they found in space
probably how i should have worded it the first time but whatever...😅
But of course when they explore the aircraft...everything goes wrong. they run into the alien and then the movie happens.
now this isn't anything new. they run into the face huggers, it impregnates one of them, chest burst happens, alien grows up, it starts killing them off one by one, companion robot goes rogue, eventually one or more main cast members "get away" & then they have to deal with one more alien, narration and then hyper sleep and credits
what i really liked this time around was this character,
the character's name is Andy and he is played by David Jonnson. I LOVED him and wanted him to survive so badly! i can't express my anger when one of the other characters started to mess with him!
Andy is an android Rain's father (the main character) made to keep her happy and safe. (it might just be happy, not sure about the safe part) so essentially they have a sister and brother relationship and I thought it was great.
There's a few other characters too but honestly I didn't care about them because i knew one if not all were gonna die...
there is really only one character that matters, her name is Kay
she pregnant, not with an alien, a human baby. becomes important later.
so somewhere in the second act, they run into a disembodied android and get him online (honestly I don't remember why...i think they needed answers about the alien...or the ship....i don't know someone correct me...😞)
Maybe i missed something in the other aliens movies (I don't think I did though cause I definitely would have remember this) but this android looks, sounds and acts just like the one from firt alien movie
It's just that his name is rook now...
now ask was played by Ian Holm. noticed i said WAS. yes, he passed away in 2020. From what I saw in the credits it seems his estate granted access to use his likeness for the movie which if the estate agrees, who am i to disagree.
I didn't mind him being added to the movie but he suddenly became so important and was used so much in the second and third act, it really took me out. he basically became a second antagonist to the alien
in addition to that, not that visual effects was bad, but there was something about it that didn't sell it for me.
the picture i added above is the actor sticking his head through the table for the shot for the first alien.
in this movie, it seemed like they took an actor who was close in age for that they need and did a really good deepfake. but, at least to me, it didn't....FEEL....like the character to me. there was something off about.
nothing to visual effects artists, there's was just something off...and i don't think that was the intention
anywhooo...
bear with me for this part because this is how i understood it..
there's a point in the movie where rook explains that he SOMEHOW developed...a serum of the aliens ability to regenerate with human dna the help evolve humans. he had tested this on a mouse that had died and then came back to life and now wants to bring back the same serum back to earth (or the company that built him)
okayyyyy....
Now remember Kay...
PREGNANT Kay....
she's important now...
she got captured by the alien in the second act but they were able to find and save her. unfortunately she was badly injury so in order to save her life and her baby's, she injected herself with the serum.
later into the movie they show that the mouse eventually dies...
however that doesn't happen to Kay...
ooooh noooo...
i wish it did because what followed....was horrifying...
It's the part that i said was different but really only in design/concept.
so...apparently the serum...sped up her pregnancy and she...
gives birth....
to an alien-human hybrid.
Now this isn't really anything new because they did something similar in alien 4
but now we get to see it in all it's glory
it's so gross and so ugly. it looks like a mixture between slender man & the pale man from pan's labyrinth, i kind you not.
i also kind you not that this thing grows from an embryo to a full grown ass alien man in like 30 secs but that's an inconsistency i noticed with the other movies so it's fine...
after that, it's basically the same end as the first alien, Rain now has to face alien human dude alone...
I'll be honest...I felt the tension when she was gearing up and then it died down so quickly cause I remember the first movie and knew exactly how this one was going to end
rain was going to win, throw the alien in space and then she would go into hyper sleep with her android brother.
and I think that's one of the problem with the movie, is that it's really predicable but it's an alien movie...you know what your getting, you know what's going to happen.
so in that case, i guess you could consider it not good, but there's still elements in here that you could say are good
honestly the movie was fine. I probably would have enjoyed it more if the dude beside me wasn't talking all the time, chewing with his mouth open, his phone going off...
but if you seem the first one, this one will act as a nice homage to original with great sets, great use of practical effects with the alien which i really, really appreciated! and great acting by the main girl and Andy and i would recommend it if you like the alien movies and or like horror movies in general
I don't remember my rating system so I'm gonna go by what I gave it on IMDB, 7.5/10 ⭐
